Geoffrey
Applegate, Principal Second
Violin of the Detroit Symphony
Orchestra (DSO), has performed in piano
trio and string quartet concerts in
Europe, as well as in North and
South America. A frequent soloist
with the DSO, he was heard most
recently in the Violin Concerto No.
4 by Vieuxtemp under guest conductor
Paavo Berglund. His performance with
the DSO of the rarely heard Kurt
Weill Violin Concerto drew
international critical acclaim and
was radio broadcast nationally. Mr.
Applegate has recorded 35 compact
discs including the concertos of
Bruch, Bach, Mendelssohn, and Mozart
with the Stuttgart Orchestra and
Vienna Festival Orchestras, and has
finished recording virtually the
entire violin concerto repertoire
for Music Minus One records.
CutTime Players features Mr.
Applegate prominently in performances of the Suite for
Violin and Jazz Septet by
Claude Bolling as well as The Four Seasons
by Antonio Vivaldi. |

Kevin
Good, has served in the trumpet
section of the DSO since 1979. He
has taught trumpet, music theory,
and jazz at Southern Methodist University
in Dallas, Texas as well as serving
on the faculty of the University of
Windsor, Wayne State University, and
the University of Michigan. As one
of the founding members of the Detroit
Chamber Winds, he presently performs
with that ensemble; they have recorded
three discs for the Koch International
Classics label. Mr. Good is an active
composer and arranger and has written
numerous jazz compositions.
CutTime Players features Mr. Good
regularly in performances of the Carnival of
Venice Variations, Pictures
at an Exhibition, and several
classic jazz works. |

Randall
Hawes
has been the Bass Trombone
for the DSO since 1985. After graduating from
Central Michigan University, he went
on to perform with the Kalamazoo,
Pittsburgh, Chicago, and Tanglewood
MusicCenter Orchestras. He also toured
Europe playing Porgy and Bess for
a year, then toured with the Woody
Herman Orchestra for two years. Mr. Hawes
also performs with the Detroit Chamber
Winds and Premier Brass. CutTime
Players features him regularly in the
Troika from Lt. Kije by
Sergei Prokofiev, I'm Gettin'
Sentimental Over You by George
Bassman and the Champagne Aria
from Mozart's Don Giovanni. |

Theodore
Oien, Principal
Clarinet
of the DSO,
is a much sought-after chamber music
and concerto soloist, who has performed
the concertos of Mozart, Weber, Strauss,
and Copland - the latter with the
composer conducting. He is a frequent
soloist with the DSO and also appears
with the Birmingham-Bloomfield, Grosse
Pointe and Dearborn symphonies. Mr.
Oien holds Bachelor's and Master's degrees from the College-Conservatory
of Music of the University of Cincinnati.
He is a faculty member of Wayne State
University, Aspen Music Festival,
and a Visiting Lecturer of Music at
the University of Michigan. CutTime Players features
Mr. Oien regularly in Mozart's
sublime Clarinet Concerto. |

Rick
Robinson, bassist, arranger,
composer and 2010 Kresge
Artist Fellow began
studying music in Highland Park, MI
public schools before he attended the
famous Interlochen
Arts Academy. He received a
Bachelors degree
from the Cleveland Institute of Music,
where he studied double bass with
Larry Angell. While there he won principal
chairs for both the Akron and Canton (Ohio)
Symphony Orchestras. Mr. Robinson then went
on to Boston for graduate studies
with Larry Wolfe at the New England
Conservatory. In 1986 he won the Haddonfield
(N.J.) Symphony Solo Competition,
performing the Bottesini B-minor Concerto.
While in Boston he served as
Principal Bass of the Portland
(Maine) Symphony Orchestra,
Assistant Principal Bass of the Boston Pops Esplanade Orchestra
and as a regular substitute with both
the Boston and Detroit Symphony Orchestras.
Mr. Robinson was famously offered a
permanent position in DSO without audition in
1989. He brought CutTime Players
together in 1995 and began transcribing and arranging 100+
classical and jazz standards.
Robinson eventually began composing
and conducting with the premiere
of his Symphony Of Brotherhood: I
HAVE A DREAM in 2003. His
grand symphonic
work Essay No. 1 (After Sibelius)
was premiered by DSO in 2006. Read a 2007 DSO article

launching his NEW band Simfonica,
may be sampled here. Also known as Mr.
CutTime, he enjoys running,
cycling, dancing and
sailing. |

Sharon
Sparrow joined the
DSO as 2nd Flute in 1997. Prior to
this engagement she was Principal Flute with
the Fort Wayne (Indiana) Philharmonic.
She also held positions with the
Memphis Symphony as Principal Flute,
and the Eastern Music Festival where
she was a teaching faculty member
and 2nd Flute with the Eastern
Philharmonic Orchestra for the last
nine years. Ms. Sparrow received her Bachelor's
Degree from the Julliard School, and
her Master's Degree from the Mannes
School of Music. Her major teachers
have included Thomas Nyfenger and
Julius Baker.
CutTime Players features Ms. Sparrow
regularly in performances of the Suite for Flute
and Jazz Septet by Claude Bolling,
Fantasie Brilliante on Themes from
Carmen by Francois Bourne. She also
serves brilliantly as Education
Director for CutTime Players,
leading all educational
programs and creating interactive
programs for children and students
such as past DSO's
Tiny Tots programs. |

Robert
Williams joined the Detroit
Symphony Orchestra as Principal
Bassoonist in September 1974. He
was formerly solo bassoonist with
the Winnipeg Symphony, Winnipeg
CBC Orchestra, Colorado Philharmonic,
and the Tucson Symphony. Mr. Williams,
an advocate of bassoon chamber music,
plays in the Buddhist Bassoon Quartet
and Trio of Boston and is a founding
member of the DSO Bassoon Quartet.
He is also a member of the DSO Woodwind
Quintet and has appeared as soloist
with the DSO on numerous occasions.
Mr. Williams can be heard on all
of the DSO/Dorati recordings on
the London label, including the
award-winning disk of Stravinsky's
The Rite of Spring.
He has been on the music faculties
of Michigan State University, University
of Michigan, Wayne State University,
and many other educational institutions.
