Let's take time with Rick to
discover MORE about the mysterious world of classical
music!
Sergei Rachmaninoff observed that "music
is enough for a lifetime, but a lifetime is not enough
for music", thus underscoring the limitless
possibilities for discovering and improving
MUSICMAKING. I'm Rick Robinson and a double bass player
for the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. I hope to offer you some adventures
in classical music. In particular I hope to present
the views of professional orchestral musicians writing
in plain English. (However readers should be warned
that our writing may not always
seem professional... BUT WE MEAN WELL!) As an
educational resource in classical music we believe
in teaching people to teach
themselves because this promotes a
long life of learning and growing.
Concert-goers should enjoy our series of casual (and
occasionally even humorous) notes entitled Nights
at the Symphony. This will be a collection
of casual observations from the edge of the orchestra.
Hopefully inspired... sometimes sarcastic...
certainly
fun & funny. However these pages will NOT be
slanderous, political, or single out any persons in
the classical music industry.............. with
the possible exception of THE VIOLAS!
Young student performers of
classical music will want to check out my Young
Musicians' Guide to the Orchestra. These are rough-as-yet
lists of common musical problems
and possible solutions for those of us who
play in orchestras. Non-performers are more than welcome
to read along of course, but just be warned that the
language gets fairly technical.
Also for new (and maybe even
intermediate) listeners of classical music,
we will offer some tips on concert etiquette and as
well as some FAQs. Also of
great interest is the
revealing series of
interviews
of 10 New York Philharmonic musicians at CNN.com!
And we have many great links to truly remarkable websites
for kids and adults!
Some of these edutainment
sections are currently empty as we prepare material
for publishing to the web. So please bookmark us and come back often
